luminescence: Powered by Light, Designed for Speed.

Overview

Merging the ethereal beauty of bioluminescence with the limitless potential of AI, Luminescence is a competitive swimwear collection that reimagines aquatic visuals in a futuristic, surreal realm. Inspired by the fluid motion of jellyfish and the mystique of the deep sea, each design incorporates flowing, organic shapes and mythical, dreamlike motifs, creating an aesthetic that feels both otherworldly and performance-driven.

Blur effects mimic the mesmerizing glow of underwater creatures, while bioluminescent-inspired accents bring a luminous, high-tech edge to the collection. Luminescence is more than swimwear—it’s an exploration of how AI transforms marine aesthetics into an ethereal, cutting-edge vision of the future.

Role

The Ask

  • Research the competitive swimwear segment to understand the audience's needs and preferences.

  • Design four distinct prints in six colorways for both women's and men's swimwear.

  • Utilize Clo 3D to apply and refine prints on swimwear models, incorporating pattern editing, piping, and binding.

  • Ensure designs are visually appealing, performance-oriented, and versatile across sizes, catering to competitive swimmers.

The Process

Research

I began the project with in-depth research on WGSN to identify a compelling theme. After reviewing several reports, the Underwater Fantasy print and graphic forecast stood out to me. This trend explores how AI is transforming aquatic imagery into imaginative and surreal worlds, featuring fluid, jellyfish-inspired forms and mythical motifs. It also highlights the use of blur effects to capture the ethereal glow and dreamlike movement of underwater environments.

pattern making

After selecting a theme and gathering reference images, I designed the motifs for my patterns. Using Illustrator, I hand-drew each motif and transformed them into repeating patterns. I then applied a range of colorways to explore different visual effects and enhance the overall cohesion of the designs.

I imported the patterns I created into CLO 3D to apply them to pre-designed swimwear. For the women’s pieces, the patterns were applied across the entire bodice, creating a bold and cohesive look. For the men’s swimwear, the patterns were applied selectively, with a matching topstitch added to enhance the design and provide subtle detailing.
